Renewed GeoConnections

The 2010 Federal Budget announced renewed funding for the GeoConnections program. The Budget provides $11 million in funding over the next two years to continue development of the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) and to provide consolidated geographic-related information to Canadians via the Internet.

Statistical Canada Administrative Boundaries (Census and Sub-Census Divisions)

The Geography Division of Statistics Canada has a mandate to maintain and build Statistics Canada's geographic infrastructure in support of the bureau's statistical programs to produce, integrate and disseminate social/economic data. A key component of this infrastructure are administrative boundaries; in particular the census division (CD) and census subdivision (CSD) boundaries.

Data products and corresponding reference maps are disseminated approximately one year following a Census. These maps are created and disseminated at scales varying from 1:1 million to 1:275 000. A generalized 1:1M hydrography layer will be required by the Geography Division of Statistics Canada to be used in the creation of the CD/CSD reference map series. These reference maps show boundaries of geographic areas to assist users of census data in relating the data to locations on the ground. It is proposed that the hydrography layer available through the CGDI National Resolution Framework be integrated with Statistics Canada?s CD/CSD boundary layer. This integrated CD/CSD boundary layer will then become part of the Framework Data Node and be disseminated free of charge to coincide with the 2001 Census data release of April 2002.

This project will realign the CD/CSD administrative boundary framework to match the CGDI National Resolution Framework base. This realignment will result in a dataset that is fully compatible with all other datasets in the National Atlas of Canada, and facilitate the use of the CD/CSD administrative framework in conjunction with other Canadian and International datasets. Where they are more accurate, Legal Survey Division (LSD) Indian Reserve boundaries will be used.

This project should be seen as a significant improvement to the CGDI National Resolution Framework as administrative boundaries are one of the targeted layers for the Framework Data Node. Statistics Canada?s CD/CSD boundary layer is widely used by federal, provincial/territorial and municipal governments as well as libraries, educational institutions, researchers and academics and the private sector. All population, dwelling and socio-economic data released after each Census of Population and Housing matches these administrative boundaries. Data collected for these areas is used by the federal government to calculate financial grants to provinces and territories, by businesses to assess demand in the marketing of products, and by the academic community and media to stay abreast of topics of current interest and to identify trends in Canadian society.
