Grande Prairie

The Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Medical Service (GPREMS), the City of Grande Prairie and TELUS Geomatics will work towards the establishment of a GIS-based emergency response and ambulance dispatch system, to serve over 25,000 sq. km. in northwestern Alberta. The system will serve both urban centers and remote isolated communities in the territory.

The system will provide ambulance crews with on-board, up-to-date digital maps of the road network to the location of the remote patient. This will allow the quick estimation of time and distance to travel, and retrieval of the procedure to follow from a database of best patient care procedures recommended for a number of major medical emergencies in various field situations, developed at the University of Alberta Hospital. Conversely, upon return from its mission, the crew will use the system to record the details of the trip and procedures followed. This will be fed-back into a comprehensive incident response database for analysis, assessment and on-going improvement of methods and procedures.
