Publishing Bird Biodiversity Information for Decision-Making
Bird Studies Canada (BSC) has launched a project to organize and publish geospatial bird monitoring data through a web-based infrastructure. This infrastructure will provide critical information on birds-key indicators of environmental health-to a large community of users and decision makers across Canada and elsewhere.
Government agencies, consulting companies, NGOs, conservation data centres, industry groups, and academia all stand to use the data services in applications such as environmental assessments and land-use planning.
BSC will organize data and create data transfer tools to make data available in standard formats. It will also leverage and extend its services to publish data through a Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI)-compliant web portal using Web Feature Service. A unified data delivery portal for all BSC projects will allow the organization to be more efficient and make its datasets much more readily available to its core user community and also to the general public.
Open access to these datasets, such as eBird, Project FeederWatch and Great Backyard Bird Count will foster improved understanding and appreciation of birds and our shared environment, and will ultimately result in better land management decisions.
