FOCUS ON:
Renewed GeoConnections
The 2010 Federal Budget announced renewed funding for the GeoConnections program. The Budget provides $11 million in funding over the next two years to continue development of the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) and to provide consolidated geographic-related information to Canadians via the Internet.

GeoConnections Assesses Data Needs for Integrated Land Management Decision-Making Processes
The sustainability of Canada's resources has an inherently geographical context. Maps are used to portray a variety of location-based information: land use, land cover, species ranges, forests set aside as carbon sinks, toxic sites and development footprints. Additionally, economic and demographic information, as well as planning information, such as zoning and cadastral data play an important role. Overall, geospatial information is a key aspect of sound decision making that is fundamental to the success of integrated land management, a key implementation vehicle to achieve sustainable development.
In pursuit of excellent geospatial solutions for sustainable development, GeoConnections is sponsoring a data needs assessment for integrated land management (ILM) decision-making processes. With the direct participation of decision-makers from four active integrated land management projects, the study will:
- Identify geospatial data sets used or selected for use to support ILM decision-making processes;
- Identify and prioritize new geospatial data sets identified by project stakeholders as being needed to support and enhance ILM decision-making processes in their region;
- Describe and understand the transformation of geospatial data sets into meaningful information for decision-makers;
- Identify any barriers that may arise in ILM decision-making processes for accessing, using (manipulating, processing, integrating, analyzing, modelling) and sharing the identified key geospatial data sets; and
- Provide opportunities and recommendations to GeoConnections and to the ILM Network for overcoming any identified barriers.
The best planning processes consider the long-term well-being an entire system. This data needs assessment for integrated land management will witness the integration and transformation of geospatial data sets into meaningful information for decision-makers and identify gaps in the technical and participatory processes that enable decision-making for sustainable development.
