Canadian Council of Forest Ministers' National Forest Information System (NFIS) User Needs Assessment
This project will deliver a user needs assessment that will identify the content, services, and functionality required by those who use the National Forest Information System (NFIS) for information access, integration, analysis, synthesis, publishing, and reporting. Ultimately, the project results will help users report on forest sustainability and support their efforts to meet Canada's provincial, national, and international forest-reporting requirements.
A Canadian Council of Forest Ministers initiative, the National Forest Information System (NFIS), is being developed to provide Canadians, and the international community, with authoritative information about the state of Canada's forests and how they are being sustainably managed. The system is enabled by the Canadian Forest Service's CFSNet.
This project will contribute toward fulfilling the NFIS's vision which is to implement the necessary information technology framework to demonstrate sustainable forest management practices in Canada.
This user-needs assessment will target CFS staff responsible for preparing and reporting on forestry information, as well as staff of government and industry partners that use the NFIS to prepare information.
The project will seek to answer a number of questions including:
- What are the tasks and goals of NFIS users?
- What navigational functions do NFIS users need?
- What questions do NFIS users need answered?
- What information do NFIS users need and in what format do they need it?
Answering these questions will help CFS incorporate into NFIS the applications, services, content, functionality, and interfaces that users need. One of the goals is to enable users to access authoritative information from distributed custodial data holdings according to Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) and Open Geospatial Consortium standards and specifications. The CGDI enables Canadians to share, access, use and combine location-based information over the Internet.
