Emergency Management Information Application

This project will develop a web-enabled Emergency Management Information Application (EMIA) to assist emergency-response organizations in northern British Columbia (BC). These organizations will be able to use data supplied through the EMIA to respond faster to enhanced 911 calls, coordinate emergency responses, and reduce duplication of effort across multiple levels of government. These capabilities will better protect residents, property, and infrastructure.

To improve emergency response, the Regional District of Fraser–Fort George (RDFFG) is setting up an enhanced 911 and disaster-management center that will cover more than one-third of BC. For such a system to function effectively, the RDFFG must include both site data (locations of houses, schools, hospitals, critical infrastructure, etc.) and a broad range of GeoBase data sets (resource roads, hydrography, orthophotos, administrative boundaries, and the like). Built on open standards endorsed by the Open Geospatial Consortium and the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure, the EMIA will create the technical means to collect, validate, maintain and distribute such data. The project will meet real and visible needs, while showcasing how different levels of government can work together to meet a broad range of public safety needs.
