The CGDI Development Network - An innovative community for public- and private-sector collaboration

The Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) Development Network is a forum for stakeholders to foster the continued growth, evolution, and interoperability of the CGDI in a supportive environment. The CGDI Development Network also provides an incubating environment for collaborative innovations, technology testing and advanced geospatial systems development, which adds to the continuing growth of the CGDI. National agencies, different federal/provincial/territorial departments, the municipal sector, and the private sector all form the CGDI Development Network through various partnerships and contributions of web services, applications, and activities.

The primary objectives of the CGDI Development Network include:

  • a consumer/supplier/developer forum for demonstration and integration of "CGDI-compliant" tools, applications and services;
  • a "near-operational" testbed to feed the "operational" CGDI;
  • a means of communicating and demonstrating CGDI "best practices";
  • an environment for confirming the development of standards-based technology; and
  • an environment for evaluating and refining multi-vendor interoperability.

An initial focus of the CGDI Development Network is the implementation of a distributed set of Web services spread across the CGDI stakeholder community, in accordance with emerging international geospatial standards and related implementation specifications

At maturity, the CGDI will enable geospatial applications to consume online data and services. Stakeholders will have access to information regarding different fields of activity and different kinds of geospatial capabilities that may be used for many important activities, such as sustainable development, transportation planning, and climate change monitoring, to name but a few. Existing services now available from the CGDI include: national/provincial mapping services, gazetteers, and application development tools.

Efforts are underway to promote awareness of the CGDI and extend participation in the CGDI Development Network. Regional workshops in Ottawa, Vancouver and Halifax were held over the past several months, where several hundred persons participated in demonstrations, technical discussions and information exchanges. Additional CGDI Development Network workshops are planned in the coming months in other regions -- please stay tuned. Membership in the CGDI Development Network is free.
