GeoConnections, a Canadian initiative to link location-based information using the power of the Internet, invites Canadian companies to submit proposals to Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) for Development of Innovative Technologies for Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) Users

Working with a host of partners, GeoConnections harnesses private-sector innovation to help Canadian decision- makers address issues in four priority areas: public health, public safety and security, the environment and sustainable development, and matters of importance to Aboriginal peoples.

Canadian companies are invited to submit proposals to conduct projects addressing one of the following six Target Areas:

  1. Access Control and Authentication
  2. Privacy and Anonymization
  3. Distributed Data Discovery and Access
  4. Semantic GeoWeband Web 2.0
  5. Vertical Standards, Tools and Applications
  6. CGDI integration with Mass-Market Tools

See the Request for Proposal (RFP) for more information about these Target Areas, the financial contributions and maximum funding amounts.

Objectives

This GeoConnections opportunity is for private sector proponents to develop specific technologies. In Track One, private sector proponents are invited to submit bids to develop specific technologies, in collaboration with CGDI user organizations. In this track, technologies are to be developed in response to user needs and deployed operationally within at least one collaborating organization as a result of projects supported under this RFP. Under Track Two, private sector proponents are invited to submit bids to develop and commercialize specific technologies.

GeoConnections encourages projects that emphasize the development of innovative technologies that address CGDI user needs. GeoConnections considers innovation to be not only the development and introduction of a new idea, but also the commercialization and implementation of that idea. GeoConnections regards commercialization as the process of introducing new products, processes, technologies, or services to the marketplace.

GeoConnections will not fund the development of prototypes or pilots. Therefore, projects should be based on previously conducted research and development, and should result in fully operational deliverables, either deployed in an operational setting in Track One, or commercially or freely available as products in Track Two.

Projects in either track should result in interoperable technologies by using open standards and specifications, as endorsed by the CGDI.

The closing date for submission of project proposals is May 21, 2008.
